by Tara B., New Member Chair

Kids in the Kitchen is an initiative by the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices; reversing the occurrence of childhood obesity and associated health issues.

The Fall New Member class took on this initiative and hosted Kids in the Kitchen at Dayton’s Bluff Recreation Center on January 27th to educate approximately 30 youth about the importance of healthy diet, exercise, and safety. The goal of this event was to share with the children fun and simple strategies in food selection and preparation along with the benefits of
exercise in order to motivate them to take care of their bodies’ every day. The children were
divided into three groups with each group participating in various healthy living stations including: educational activities, physical activities, and hands on cooking using the colors of the rainbow.

It was an honor to partner with Dayton’s Bluff Recreation Center in building a foundation of healthy eating habits that will guide the children into their teenage years and beyond.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is in Town and JLSP is pitching in to help!

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (EMHE) is in town and the Junior League of Saint Paul is honored to be supporting the effort by providing volunteers and helping to design the new daycare facility in the Morris home. Be sure to check out the JLSP blog daily as we will be providing regular updates on the development of the home as well as what the Junior League of Saint Paul is doing to help.

The Morris Family
Sixteen years ago, Sandy Morris was pregnant with her first child and working as an early childhood education teacher. After the birth of her daughter, Catricia, Sandy examined her daycare options and discovered that none of them met her standards. Sandy decided to quit her job and start her own affordable daycare for the Saint Paul community. She offers a multicultural environment to these children, who affectionately call her "Tia Sandy." Sandy's dedication to her daycare and her community has produced one of the best daycares in the city.

Unfortunately, Sandy runs her daycare out of their 100-year-old home, which is falling apart. The numerous repairs needed to make the home safe threaten to shut down the daycare. The Junior League of Saint Paul is honored to be a part of helping build the Morris family a safe home that is a sanctuary for their family and will enable Sandy's daycare to remain a center of community life and education.

Day 1: Door Knock!
On Friday morning, the Morris family was greeted by Ty Pennington of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, letting them know that they were the recipients of a new home to be built this week. The Junior League of Saint Paul, TJB Homes, and countless volunteers are off- working continuously until the big reveal to the family on October 9th.

October General Membership and Training Meeting Recap

At this month’s General Membership and Training meeting Judy Kishel, sustainer and former Junior League of Saint Paul spoke about her experience and the “domino effect of saying ‘yes’”. Some highlights of Judy’s 32 year career with the League include learning how to plan large events on the education committee, chairing the Children’s Hospital Ball committee, the many training opportunities, serving on the board for the Association of Junior League International and most of all the discovering the importance of the friendships that she made over the years through the League. Judy also shared her talent for needlepoint with the presentation of the President’s pillow to former JLSP president Ginger Overbye.

At the GMTM League members were also honored for their generous financial donations to the League by Judy Kishel, Liz Boyd and Tracey Tipler, chairs of The Centennial committee. They presented beautiful Junior League scarves to these members as a thank you for their contribution.

Lastly, Loralee DiLorenzo, Junior League of Saint Paul shared hand-made cards from the children at the recreational centers in Saint Paul that had participated in the recent St. Paul Plays event. These letters included such members as:

· “Thank you game people”
· “Thank you guys for the games you played with me”
· “Thank you for coming to our Rec center”

Please join us at next month’s GMTM meeting at the Lexington on November 11th.
